This room, located at the back of the Tsukamoto-tei building, includes lampshades woven by a local Yame craftsperson, an intricately constructed woven bamboo tabletop, and relaxing bamboo chairs with skillfully crafted soft curves.

The first floor includes a woven bamboo table as the centerpiece of a tatami mat room and a bathroom furnished with a wooden bathtub. Upstairs, the wood-floored room is decorated with bamboo chairs. The shoji screen paper on the second floor is made of washi paper infused with parts of sliding fusuma doors originally in the room before renovation. The history of this region can also be felt through Kurume Kasuri cushions that feature the chrysanthemum motif painted on the building’s original fusuma doors.

A stay (Breakfast Included)+Make Your Very Own Indigo Art at Aizome Kasuri Kobo (2-3hrs) Plan
This plan includes a stay with breakfast and a “Make Your Very Own Indigo Art at Aizome Kasuri Kobo” tour.

Even among Kurume Kasuri makers, Aizome Kasuri Kobo deals in the most traditional indigo dyeing methods. Pure indigo dyeing involves a fermentation process carried out by thousands of microorganisms. In addition to dyeing, this process requires careful management of the living indigo, a test of the skills and steadfastness of the craftsperson. In this program, first take an inside look at the workshop’s studio space and indigo fields before creating your own piece of art by dyeing cloth or Japanese washi paper with indigo. Through this experience, enjoy the color of rich indigo blue itself.

【1 Night, 2 Meals】Bamboo room (1 night includes breakfast served in a wood and bamboo oke and a duck hot pot dinner)

This plan includes one night in the Bamboo room plus breakfast and dinner.

Breakfast is served in your room in a wood and bamboo oke made by local artist, Matsunobu Kogei. The meal  incorporates the uses a wide variety of local ingredients. 

For dinner, enjoy a specialty course that includes an appetizer, duck hot pot, rice porridge, and dessert. This meal is served at a restaurant called Hayama which is located 5 minutes walk from the Bamboo room. For guests who do not like duck, pork can be substituted. Please order and pay for drinks at the restaurant. (18:00 - 22:00, last order: 21:00)

This plan includes a stay with breakfast and a “Yame Fukushima: Meet the Craftspeople Keeping Traditions Alive ” tour.

This is the Yame Walking Tour designed with heat in mind. Through a 1km route, the course still takes guests to all the major spots of the tour. Descriptions will be given mainly in the shade and indoors. Yame Fukushima is an area filled with tradition and home to many craftspeople who still make their livelihoods here. This course offers a unique introduction to the living history of Yame through a handpicked itinerary that takes you through streets filled with traditional architecture, inside hard-to-access Buddhist altar and paper lantern-making artisans workshops, and more. A Stay (Breakfast Included)+Experience the Crafts of Yame Through Matcha Tea (1hr) Plan
This plan includes a stay with breakfast and a “Experience the Crafts of Yame Through Matcha Tea” tour.

Kurume Kasuri textiles, buddhist altars, wooden bucket-making, carpentry — Yame is a place where craftspeople live and work side-by-side. Craftpeople from each of these traditions were asked to create an original utensil/tool to be used in the matcha process. Enjoy a tea experience unique to Yame. The experience takes place at Maruyasabo in the Fukushima district of Yame, a beautiful white-walled traditional townscape dating back hundreds of years. Under the guidance of Asuka Hori, a master tea practitioner, you can try your hand at making some of your own matcha tea. Ms. Hori, who is well acquainted with Yame's craftspeople, is filled with captivating stories and knowledge. Allow this experience to serve as the gateway to your Yame journey.

A Stay (Breakfast Included)+Create Your Own Azuma Bag at Nomura Textile(1.45 hours) Plan
This plan includes a stay with breakfast and a “Create Your Own Azuma Bag at Nomura Textile
” tour.

Nomura Textile is a Kurume Kasuri weaver based in Hirokawa Town, Fukuoka Prefecture. The easy-to-understand factory tour led by owner Shutaro Nomura makes the tour popular also among visitors who are experiencing Kurume Kasuri for the first time. After the tour, choose your favorite fabric from Nomura Textile’s colorful selection of Kurume Kasuri and sew them together to create your very own azuma bag, an Edo Period (1603-1867) version of the modern reusable bag. The bags can be completed with a simple straight stitch, but for those who find it difficult to sew, staff can help by stitching the bag together with a sewing machine. There are also many unique Kurume Kasuri clothing pieces, such as one-piece dresses and wide pants, available for purchase at the Nomura Textile shop.

Bamboo Room (Breakfast Included)+Make Your Own Scarf at Shimogawa Textile (2hrs) Plan
This plan includes a stay in the Bamboo Room, along with breakfast and a “Make Your Own Scarf at Shimogawa Textile” tour.
 
Even among the few remaining Kurume Kasuri textile weavers (orimoto) in the Chikugo region of southern Fukuoka Prefecture, Shimogawa Textile is unique in its trailblazing approach that isn’t bound by conventionality. In this tour, third-generation owner Kyozo Shimogawa will explain the production process of Kurume Kasuri and the work of Shimogawa Textile. Afterwards, take a look at factory floors filled with belt-line power looms — a historical relic of the industrial revolution. Finally, choose your favorite design from Shimogawa Textile’s vast selection of Kurume Kasuri fabrics, and make your very own scarf without needing to use needle or thread.

Bamboo Room (Breakfast Included)+The Kurume Kasuri Craft of Ikeda Kasuri Kobo (1.5 hrs) Plan
This plan includes a stay in the Bamboo Room, along with breakfast and a “The Kurume Kasuri Craft of Ikeda Kasuri Kobo” tour.

Kurume Kasuri has been woven for over 200 years in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. Ikeda Kasuri Kobo of Chikugo City is one of the few weavers left that continue to use traditional indigo-dyed hand-woven methods to produce this craft. In this program, join fourth-generation owner Daigo Ikeda on a factory tour as he explains the craftmaking techniques and history of Kurume Kasuri. Afterwards, head to the workshop’s dye studio for an indigo dyeing experience. Learn about resist-dyeing techniques such as itajime (clamping fabric between wooden boards) and shibori (tying fabric with bands). Using these skills, dye an original tote bag from the Kyushu-Chikugo regional trading shop Unagi no Nedoko. You can also bring your own fabric and/or clothes to dye (additional fees may apply).
